Course Description:
In this 3-hour CLE program, we are headed to the future, to the year 2029, where an AI is proctoring a legal ethics certification exam.
In the first hour, you'll learn about:

Fulfilling duties to prospective corporate clients
In the second hour, we'll go over:

The ethical issues surrounding deepfakes and other false or misleading evidence

The final hour of the program will address:

A lawyer's responsibilities regarding non-lawyer assistants

Navigating the fallout of a network breach

A lawyer's duty relative to Rule 5.3: Relationships and conflicts that arise from of-counsel relationships.

Presenters
Mark Bassingthwaighte, Esq., serves as Risk Manager at ALPS, a leading provider of insurance and risk management solutions for law firms. Since joining ALPS in 1998, Mark has worked with more than 1,200 law firms nationwide, helping attorneys identify vulnerabilities, strengthen firm operations, and reduce professional liability risks.He has presented over 700 continuing legal education (CLE) seminars across the United States and written extensively on topics including risk management, legal ethics, and cybersecurity.
A trusted voice in the legal community, Mark is a member of the State Bar of Montana and the American Bar Association and holds a J.D. from Drake University Law School. His mission is to help attorneys build safer, more resilient practices in a rapidly evolving legal environment.
James W. Rice, Jr. serves as Assistant Ethics Counsel at the Virginia State Bar. James previously worked at Bloomberg Industry Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers (“PwC”), where he focused on federal and state excise tax. He also has experience in private practice, primarily handling criminal defense and estate planning matters. James received degrees from Millsaps College in Philosophy and Business Administration and earned his law degree at Mississippi College School of Law.
Lisa Brook brings three decades of legal expertise to complex medical malpractice and personal injury cases. She delivers results through strategic litigation, effective negotiation, and skilled mediation. Lisa earned her law degree from William & Mary Law School and began her career as a law clerk to administrative law judges. She has owned and operated a solo practice and has worked with attorneys at the highest level in Virginia and throughout the country. She is a certified mediator with specialized training from Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation. Lisa practices throughout Southwest Virginia from her base in Charlottesville. She is admitted to practice in Virginia state courts, federal district courts, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. -
